Impluvium O’Connor at Rice University

Impluvium O’Connor is the first outdoor implementation of the “Impluvium Redux” prototype.

The prototype is presented as a model of interdisciplinary and ecological research at Rice University, integrating structural, environmental, and architectural concerns. Installed on the rooftop terrace of the “Ralph S. O’Connor Building for Engineering Science,” the prototype occupies a site designed by SOM to serve as an epicenter for interdisciplinary collaboration—offering flexible spaces for research and innovation. Developed in collaboration with Arup Engineering, the modular ballast structure arises from the repurposing and reuse of all materials exhibited at the Time, Space, Existence

Venice Biennale in 2025.

Future iterations will expand the prototype’s role as an experimental platform for interdisciplinary courses at Rice University, while also redesigning and dimensioning its structural elements to withstand wind loads. Planned enhancements include the

integration of an automated mechanism to activate the kinetic origami membrane, along with the full operation of the water collection and reuse system.
